If I install windows XP onto a computer that currently has 98 on it, will it reformat the hard drive before installing?
I pretty sure it doesn't have to - only if you ask it to. Am I right?
You can just use your disk to Upgrade the current version of windows. If you stick the CD in when you're in windows 98, when you run the installation you'll get the option to Upgrade or for a new Installation.
Upgrading 'should' keep all your programs and settings without the need to back anything up. I say should because when i did this on my machine it fecked up half of the programs i had and i ended up formatting anyway.
If you can you're always best taking a backup of your files, making sure you've got the CD for the programs/games you want to keep, and formatting the drive. Then you can install to a clean NTFS (which is faster than FAT32) drive.
If you want to do the upgrade, I'd back up what you want anyway, just in case![]()
I wouldn't recommend upgrading, its just easier with less hassle to format and start again.
