Remote Desktop - Software keeps running ad infinitum?

I'm aware that when you launch the RDP client, the remote target opens a session rather than running directly on the desktop like VNC, and that software runs through that session.

Question is, how long does that session last? I'm aware that any software opened under RDP continues to run, but is that ad infinitum, or does it have a time limit?

I ask because I'm aware that some software on my server hasn't been running for a while, then today I opened up the RDP client to check what was up with it, and as soon as I opened the window, that software suddenly started booting up. I have no idea why it did that, and it should have been running all the time, although I'm sure I opened it originally in an RDP client. Is it possible that the session expired after 30 days or something, and closed the software, only reopening it when I reopened the RDP connection?

It should keep running. Are you sure the server didn't restart for updates, or the software didn't crash?

It could easily have done, it's a pretty knackered old box. Given that you reckon it should have kept running, I might upgrade that to almost certainly did.

I just wasn't sure why I thought the sessions kept running forever, so thought I'd better check.

It sounds like the software is set to start on a user login and not running as a service? If so, this is expected behaviour.

It's why webservers and such run as a service - no matter if the machine is rebooted, it'll start as soon as it's allowed to. No user interaction required.

Yeah, it's not designed to be used as a service, although I suppose it may be possible to make it into one with that tool (I think MS released one while back... not that I can remember its name). EDIT: Google says Srvany.exe

I might look into it, but it's not too big a problem since the machine stays on 24/7.

The amount of time a disconnected session is kept open is an option in the TS (or RDS) listener options.
Or, as has been said, either the server rebooted or you connected to a different session, i.e. admin console on Server 2003.

Re: Remote Desktop - Software keeps running ad infinitum?

My bet would be that the box rebooted for patch installation. Try changing your windows update option to let you choose when to install. You just need to remember to go and check it after patch tuesday, install the patches, reboot and then log back in so your software starts again. I think the default RD options are to keep disconnected sessions open forever, so unless you have set a timeout it probably isn't that.
