Reset Windows 7 Login Password without software/downloads

Hi guys,

I am sorry this is in the wrong location but I am really keen to get an answer ASAP.

My Dad is ''abroad'' with the military for several months, and ordered a new laptop to be taken out by a friend so he can have access to skype/e-mail to stay in touch. Now for some daft reason my dad's friend put a password on the laptop before he took it out with him to give to my dad....only to go and forget the password - a massive wtf?


However, my Dad now has only a few minutes a day access to e-mails to stay in touch with me, mum, family etc and he is struggling to stay in regular contact.

I have tried googling in it but all that comes up are download tools/software or what look to be half baked instructions. I would also like a more or less sure fire way of doing it (if possible) rather then just sending him a series of untried (by me/one of you guys) instructions only for each one to fail.

I would be very grateful if this could be left in GD for a couple of days prior to being moved to the correct software forum! I am keen to get an answer ASAP as family are struggling a bit with such infrequent/unreliable contact with him.

edit; From what I can tell there isn't a windows 7 installation disc he can use, just the laptop & power lead.

If there was a way of doing this so easily there would be no point to the password. Without either a password crack program like OPHCrack or a reinstall I would say its going to be very hard.

Ah damn, I was hoping there was some fancy command prompt trick like below. I have asked him to hunt around for someone with a windows 7 disc, he has the serial code with him.

I doubt there's any easy way to do this without software or downloads.

Personally I'd just use a boot CD like Hirens, they have plenty of password recovery tools which could help you in this situation.

OPHcrack is what I use, if that doesn't work an ubuntu live disc is the answer. It's fairly easy to reset passwords via ubuntu but getting the disc/usb drive to your dad in the first place is obviously going to be out of the question?

If only it was still as easy as xp was (hitting ctrl alt del 3 times and typing in administrator) My god I caused havok in school thanks to that >_<.

Thanks for all the responses guys, dad's mate managed to remember the password so problem sorted itself. We now have almost daily contact with him, which is doing my mum a whole world of good!

(1) If you have created a password reset disk in advance, then you can boot it to reset the lost Windows 7 password.
(2) You can also try to login using a different account that has administrator privileges to change the password.
(3) If you just changed the password then boot on safe mode and restore the computer to a previous state using system restore.
(4) There is also a lot of password recovery software out there to either to remove, change, or hack the Windows password for accounts. As for free program, Ophcrack is the best choice. But without basic password cracking knowledge you may can't get it to work. The recovery time mainly depends on the complexity of your passwords. In other words, if your password is too long or you are computer newbies, it doesn’t work at all. So you had better try the most powerful and easy-to-use windows password reset tool such as Windows Password Recovery Tool (windowspasswordsrecovery) or Windows Password Key (lostwindowspassword), etc.
(5) The last option would be to reinstall the computer operating system with the repair option or another operating system to access the computer.

Use OPHCrack Vista version for Windows 7, provided you have a password less than 13 characters to crack it will find it. Tried and tested on all my works PCs. Xp and Vista/7 stand no chance.

You can create a PCUnlocker Live CD using another computer that you have access to, then boot your locked PC from the CD and it enables you to reset Windows 7 login password easily. Of course, it's also a good idea to make such a recovery disc in case this similar problem happens in future.

It is delivered as an ISO image file, you will have to burn a CD/USB drive, it is then used to boot the machine.

It works on all versions of Windows.
