You could use Netmeeting which is built into Windows, but I'm sure somebody will find a much better alternative pretty sharpish.
"Well, there was your Uncle Tiberius who died wrapped in cabbage leaves but we assumed that was a freak accident."
ie without any connection to the web ?
if you run exchange server , you can run local windows messenger ?

Yeah just LAN, no web and no exhange server. Like 'net send' but with a better interface and possibly win 98 support.
I tried real popupReal Popup but the interface is still a bit fiddly.
Just wondering do any of you guys know of anything better?
I dont know alot about this, but google for Jabber, i belive you can run your own jabber server![]()

jabber is an excellent solution, and different levels of product for home network - to Internet, to enterprise company, this also allows multiple clients type to connect to it, as well as a web client.
It is Inevitable.....
surely if its a LAN the person can't be to far away, how about you try shouting?
will save the bandwidth
Well the whole problem is that its too far to shout (c50m) so you either have to get up and walk/run to other building or netsend which is a bit annoying.
Will have a look at Jabber but I am only thinking on a small scale (4 or 5 systems) so running a server is a bit over the top. I am thinking more in terms of peer to peer messaging although something that would support Linux would be handy.
ok winchat for the MS products, or talkd for llinux or any unix system
It is Inevitable.....
back in college we used a little software called vypress chat..but i guess that's more of a irc style chat proggie than an instant messaging..still worth trying out IMHO![]()
I've found this instant messaging software for lan at google. An easy tool like MSN messenger. But it isn't free
I'm using trial version now
How about this http://www.miranda-im.org/download/d...iewfile&id=641
It requires Miranda IM, but you can remove the standard yahoo/msn/aim/icq/jabber plugins.
jeez, wish winpopup was in nt os' - used to have so much fun with that back at school setting it to send messages to entire workgroup rofl, this used to rule on 95 and 98

I wrote a program in Visual Basic which automates the net send process... But only for NT machines![]()
