    ****ing WINDOWS POS **** **&Y^^%^!!!!

I HATE Windows. Hexeh, that's not a cue for you to come and pimp Linux

I had the contents of the My Documents folder all nice and secure, encrypted using the EFS built into Windows XP. Anyway, yesterday, I couldnt access any of the files....after lots more fiddling, I still cant. It looks like Windows has locked me out of my own files, and now there's sweet FA I can do about it. Great.

Anyway, I wont be trusting Windows again; can anyone recommend some decent encryption software which is fast and easy to use?

    Also, from help:

"To change the recovery policy for the local computer
Click Start, click Run, type mmc, and then click OK.
On the File menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in, and then click Add.
Under Add Standalone Snap-in, click Group Policy Object Editor, and then click Add.
Under Group Policy Object, make sure that Local Computer is displayed, click Finish.
Click Close, and then click OK.
In Local Computer Policy, click Public Key Policies.
    Where?

    Local Computer Policy
    Computer Configuration
    Windows Settings
    Security Settings
    Public Key Policies
Right-click Encrypting File System, and then do one of the following:
To designate a user as an additional recovery agent using the Add Recovery Agent Wizard, click Add Data Recovery Agent.
To allow EFS to work without recovery agents, point to All Tasks and then click Do Not Require Data Recovery Agents.
To delete this EFS policy and every recovery agent, point to All Tasks and then click Delete Policy. If you select this option, users can still encrypt files on this computer. Note that this option will not appear unless there is an EFS policy on the computer.
    Important

Before changing the recovery policy in any way, you should first back up the recovery keys to a floppy disk.
    Notes

To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority. If the computer is joined to a domain, members of the Domain Admins group might be able to perform this procedure. As a security best practice, consider using Run as to perform this procedure.
There is no default recovery agent on a standalone computer. A file recovery certificate can be created by running cipher.exe /r, and the Add Data Recovery Agent option can be used to import this certificate into the EFS policy. Fore more information on cipher.exe, see Related Topics.
You can make changes to the File Recovery certificate by right-clicking the certificate and then clicking Properties. For example, you can give the certificate a friendly name and enter a text description."

But he's right. What the fudge are you doing encrypting stuff anyway? If you want safe data, keep it offline

I did have a Google, but all the stuff I came up with said my data was toast. I'll give those instructions a try, cheers Nichomach.

As for user error...it might have been. But I sorted the mess out, and decided to give it another go. The encryption worked fine for a day or so, then the same thing happened. Obviously I was being very careful; so I'm not sure. It's not like I'm some button jabbing n00b

but at the end of the day did you *need* to encrypt those files ? or dont you like sharing pr0n with other users of the computer ?

most of the time , NTFS permissions should have been enough

Come on guys, I paid good money for the feature, why should people question my desire to use it?

I just like my privacy. Some documents I have are confidential, some I simply wouldnt want anyone looking at. Some don't just relate to me. A lot of work I do is legal work for other people. Rarely I might have to shut down my firewall when I'm online because it's the only way to get the odd program to work (and I've tried this with several different firewalls, before you all start ).

Dont get me wrong, maybe encryption wasnt necessary, but it's a feature I'd paid for, I thought I may as well use it. The comment about keeping data offline for security was a good one - but this isnt practical at the moment, I dont have an external device, short of burning everything to CD.

Tbh I thought more of you would have encrypted stuff. Maybe you just dont consider your schoolwork and pr0n important enough to encrypt

I'll stop being a n00b now and leave the files alone.

Most of windows' other utilities which come with the operating system aren't half as good as other software you can get out there.

That could be applied to windows itself but as MAS says we've paid good money for it ( ) and it should work.

If you were to replace all the other utilites that come with windows youd end up with loads of little 3rd party programs which might work better than their windows couterparts but would be a pain to keep track of and increase the chance of 'user error' .

I wonder how good the new Via PadLock Hardware Security Suite thingy on the new Mini ITX boards is going to turn out? Pretty heavy duty encryption in comparison to windows EFS anyway.
