Microsoft SQL Optimisation - What training?

I'm looking to expand my knowledge of MSSQL Server 2008, and was wondering which were the relevant Microsoft exams to study for with regards to performing troubleshooting SQL queries generated by an application. For example, I can perform some basic checking of the queries that are generated, and identify problem issues if the lock lingers long enough to get the details, but I have little idea on how to capture a proper trace and understand the information it contains.

I realise that there's unlikely to be a one size fits all training, which is why I'm looking at suggested exams which can be used to get tailored training from the appropriate companies.

I think the exam you're looking as it 70-432. I just took out a sub to Trainsignal ($49 USD a month seems a pretty good deal for access to all of their training materials) - worth taking advantage of their 3 day trial, see if it's something for you?

I am a self-taught DBA so I don't have any great book recommendations for you....

But learn to love the "Query Execution Plan"....it will contain pretty much all the info you require....it's just a case of understanding a few concepts in SQL.

ergh. Bad memories flashing up in this thread.

As mentioned it's pretty much learning the server execution plans and how you can re-index,partition and change the undelrying storage.

Thanks so far, currently we're happy with setup, and I'm left trying to track down the areas where our developers are sending crappy queries through.

The query itself might be ok - but if you have the wrong indexes in place it'll run like a dog.
