    mandrake 10.1 help...

last night i decided that as ive nothing much to do this week i would download the latest mandrake release and install it and play around for a bit. so downloaded 10.1 last night (3cds worth), md5's are all fine, so the isos are too.. cept i burnt them all to cd this morning, put in the first one, boot from it, etc, get to the point where i can choose all the stuff to install, click 'next' and it tells me it cant find xxxxxx package (xxxxx being the name of a package), do i want to continue 'yes', another error with another package.. same thing for the next 10 packages, so i gave up. tried rebooting a couple of times, no avail, tried putting the 2nd cd in, but the drive door wouldnt open *sigh*.

now im burning the 1st iso to a different cd to try again... oh and even tho i told it to partition/format my harddrive its been left intact? (2 harddrives, i unplugged this one(sata) with windows on to install, left the other one(ide)connected)... hmm any ideas chaps?

This has happened to me before. For me it turned out to be errors created while downloading the iso. Try redownloading the first iso, it worked for me! Good luck!

.. this is why i stopped playing with linux the last time. how the hell do i instal l the stupid nvidia drivers?

ive downloaded both the nforce, and the 6111 graphics drivers, followed the instructions, and got nowhere.

the nforce drivers actually install, but linux is still trying to use old drivers (some intel ones) instead of the 'nvsound' ones... i edited the modprobe.conf file like nvidia tell me to, does it work? of course not.

the graphics drivers dont even install! give me some error about having rivafb module present, then the installer dies, ive tried with the '--add-this-kernel' suffix, tried extracting it and 'make install'ing it.. yet it refuses to work..

does anybody know a) what im on about and b) how to fix these problems? mandrake is supposedly the best desktop-replacement distro, yet i cant get it to work

you can't install the nvidia drivers whilst the graphics subsystem, xfree86(xorg), is running. you need to exit from X somehow, then run the installer. you may need kernel source code and/or headers installed in the right places.

It shouldn't really choke on rivafb, it's usually just a warning.

as for nvsound, i hear that it's incredibly unstable at the moment, compared to snd-intel8x0 or i810_audio. i use snd-intel8x0 on my onboard (realtek alc650).

if you want to force a driver to load, add it to /etc/modules.

3d driver installation on Debian 3.1 is covered at http://www.hexus.net/content/reviews...JsX3BhZ2U9Nw== - your mileage trying to apply it to mandrake may vary.

also, try pasting the contents of /var/log/nvidia-installer.log for us to take a look.

ok, well i was looking some more on google, turns out if you edit the NV.c file and change 'PM_SAVE_STATE' to 'PM_RESUME_MEM' the nvidia-installer works. and well it did so now ive got X working with the nvidia graphics... hmm now im trying to setup half-life (because its half the fun) but i need flex/bison possibly both, i think i needed both when i installed mandrake8.2 ages ago - this is to install WINE btw, but i cant seem to find them... more googling i feel. cheers for help tho directhex

edit : *sigh* now its decided not to work again... back to windows i cba with it anymore
