MATE as a replacement for Gnome 3

So it seems that there may be an alternative to Gnome 3 and the latest instanciations of KDE thst assume that everyone embraces a 'tablet' interface.

MATE version 1.6 has been released and looks to be a viable alternative to Gnome 3 on the later versions of the Linux kernel.

    Which is great news!

Has anyone tried it yet? I think I might try it out in a VM, but I'd be interested in anyone else's experiences.

It looked a bit unpolished and rough around the edges when I first saw it, though it's probably been cleaned up a bit now. What's tablet-like about KDE?

Latest versions of KDE seem more tablet like than before, although KDE has (to me) seemed more 'web browser' in terms of a UI.

Maybe I'm less analytical when it comes to usability design :-) I just like what I see on screen, can customise extensively and can get around pretty fast so works for me!

to be honest if you work with gnome 3 and get the right extensions you can make gnome 3 behave like a more polished version of gnome 2 - or anywhere in between gnome 2 and gnome 3.

now that the flaming has clamed down and people are working with what's there you can get some excellent desktop configurations from it.

Re: MATE as a replacement for Gnome 3

MATE is a dead end - a continuation of abandoned GNOME 2 source, by third rate programmers.

We're using GNOME 3's "fallback mode" as our main desktop at work, which basically behaves like the old GNOME 2 desktop.

What about Cinammon? I use Mint with Cinnamon on my server and I've been impressed. It's got a nice clean, easy to use interface.

Cinnamon is fine, it's an attempt to get the feel of something usable via GNOME 3 libraries, i.e. isn't a step backwards

Re: MATE as a replacement for Gnome 3

I prefer Cinnamon to Gnome 3. I think its success has meant MATE isn't going to go anywhere.

Re: MATE as a replacement for Gnome 3

Were Cinnamon and MATE not both funded by Mint developers? I know that Mint is now putting its resources behind Cinnamon now and dropping MATE from future releases.

Re: MATE as a replacement for Gnome 3

I think MATE was originally Mint, and Cinnamon was Arch. Possibly the other way round.

Re: MATE as a replacement for Gnome 3

I always thought Cinnamon was the replacement for GNOME 3, being based on its code and all. MATE, on the other hand, uses GNOME 2 code.
