    Win XP Starter Edition

Microsoft has released screenshots and photos of their soon to be released Windows XP starter edition.

SE is a cut down version of Windows XP, with less features and restrictions placed on its use. Microsoft hopes that a low price, cut down version, will help in countries where piracy is a major issue; East-Asia is one of the main places that Microsoft hopes the product will help.

Windows XP SE will be launched in October

well thats not gonna work, maybe a low-price full version would, but i doubt people would want to pay for an 'incomplete' product when they could get a full version for (effectively) free?

Sounds like it'll be perfect for people who only wanna use their PC as a glorified typewriter with built in solitaire...

Well I dont think its going to convince anyone to upgrade from there already pirated installs of winxp and 2k.

The cut down version sounds about as usefull as win3.1....

Its clearly a pointless waste of time. People who dont mind stealing Win xp are not going to be suddenly conviced to pay for a cut down version that probably doesnt do all they would want.

Its like bringing out a car, thats cheaper, but cant go more than 30mph and only works between 9am and 5pm. Is that going to convince car thieves to buy one??

This is Microsofts plan to tackle what it sees as the growing popularity problem of linux particularly in developing countries. Many developing countries are choosing/Using linux over windows. MS as a company obviously needs to address this problem.

It gets worse; " Further simplification of the operating system includes the display resolution set to 800x600 maximum"...

How completely @rse is that? Who'd want to use it? Let alone pay for it?

They should sell Windows XP home edition for £50 no more, perhaps an upgrade version for £30.

XP home edition for £150 is just too much money, and the upgrade at £75 isnt much better.

I feel like Bill gates himself is stealing money from my wallet everytime i buy a new O\S.

I also thought of building PC's as a part-time business but the price of the operating system makes it hard to compete with PC world or any other large businesses im too small frie

erm... aren't you the one complaining that it was deeply wrong that microsoft were discouraged from making everything under the sun, and forcing it down everybody's throats?

starter edition is there to do two jobs. it's meant to make legit versions of windows only fractionally more expensive than pirate compies, in developing countries with piracy problems.

more importantly, it's to stop legit free alternatives (i.e. linux) from getting a foothold that ms are unlikely to break.

ms would _MUCH_ rather people pirate windows than use linux for free. if that means ensuring all machines come with a castrated windows that is guaranteed to be replaced with pirate xp pro, then that's part of the business plan.

yeah that was me, and I’m still for that, but i do have other views like charging to much for windows xp, making a crappy starter version and so on...

but i don't think they should be stopped from making and giving media player away with copies of windows for example

charging too much? now there's a cut-down budget version. it still comes with media player, isn't that the important thing?
