Streaming video from server?
What's up Hexusites.
I want to setup some kind of media server, but without relying on a local device which has to be powered up. I want access to my media at any time over any net connection.
I've tried a cloud service which attempts to do this - qvivo.com - but it's severely lacking right now.
Is there anything stopping me from just getting some unlimited web storage, uploading all my videos, and just streaming them with VLC or similar?
Re: Streaming video from server?
I'm not sure what sort of data quantities you are talking about as upload to external storage may take a VERY long time (My media server is upto 12Tb used).
My suggestion would be picking up something like a HP microserver for <£100 (I think they are as low as £89 at the moment) as a 'always on' NAS / Media Server and then use PLEX to stream to/from any device on any connection. I use it on my tablet to stream my media over 3G.
Re: Streaming video from server?
Upload isn't an issue, I've got a fast upstream link so it wouldn't take a ridiculous amount of time.
I'm trying to avoid using any hardware because it means having something powered on all the time, would prefer an online solution so I don't have to deal with that side of things. I did check out those microservers before but they only have a single HDD slot.
Re: Streaming video from server?
Single slot? Its got a 4 bay hotswap drive in the front and a 5.25 bay which you can stick another in. I have 5x 2TB drives internally and 2x 1TB drives externally on mine :P
but if you are looking for an online solution I can't really help, I haven't seen anything that meets your needs in that area :(
Re: Streaming video from server?
Ah, right, okay I misread the specs. That makes a big difference then.
