Probably because windows update has installed the microsoft version of the nvidia binaries and needs to be rebooted before they finish the install, which locks out/hangs you trying to install the official ones.

Installing in parallel isn't especially recommended, could be two things trying to modify the same thing and locking each other out. Restarting should be safe, but stick to the windows updates at first, then only when that's sorted do the nVidia updates.

Can be, sure. Check there isn't a permissions box waiting for you to OK it somewhere.

Re: new NVIDIA drivers not working.

It's finally moved onto update 4 out 114 now. I've recently built this computer and it's been nothing but rubbish! being extremely slow, installs and updates hanging. For a 8 core 8350 and gtx 770 system, I thought it would atleast be faster than my older computer...

Windows updating is always frustrating - it's often internet limited, and even when not, it seems quite unoptimised and hits all sorts of I/O bottlenecks. Best set it and go enjoy a cold beer outside for the evening.

Thing is, if you were hitting a bottle neck in your old machine that's present in your new one, it won't feel any faster.

It's why when people move to a SSD it's a "OMG" moment for a lot of them. By far the slowest part in a 'modern' PC is a spindle based HDD. If you upgrade your CPU, GPU, Memory and whatever else, but not the HDD....you're still hitting the same bottleneck for your drive I/O operations. Namely, in this case, Windows Update.

Re: new NVIDIA drivers not working.

Uninstall the drivers through your control panel and then go into Nvidia's archive and try the previous drivers again.
