Talk about having things both ways! A few months ago in its "Scroogled" ad campaign, Microsoft was complaining about how Google uses your search terms and Gmail contents to deliver targeted ads. Now, Microsoft is touting how Windows 8.1 uses your search terms to deliver targeted ads, even when you're doing searches on local drives.
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

You have to be searching your local drives via the search Everything feature, which erm, searches everything, including files, emails, apps (ie lets app search within their context, think Netflix for 'breaking bad').
So yeah. Complete non-story.

Bull in what way?
Multiple sites are reporting that your search results are sent to Bing and is a default opt-in thing that you need to turn off. For example: http://www.howtogeek.com/166949/how-...search-engine/

I think that's kinda the point that these sites are reporting on. When you're searching your computer, you don't expect (well I don't) the result to be sent elsewhere. Certainly not so this can be used for advert targeting : http://www.engadget.com/2013/07/03/m...-smart-search/
If this really is opt-in though, fair enough. But it's not being reported like that just yet.

Erm, it is not searching your computer in that mode. It is incredibly obvious this fact, because you get about 5B web pages. Not too mention the whole Everything option.
It also depends how you mean search, because say you are in explorer and type something in to the search box in the top right, it isn't going via this.
If you press the search key (if you have a Win8 or later keyboard) or use the search charm, it defaults to everything, but it has a set of options.
Searching everything by default for the search charm makes sense to my semantics of searching the web as a more common task.
I also had to opt-in to this feature when installing, obviously I am just on a public beta, so that could easily change. I'd also expect it to be opted out on the express settings as MS do this for say "User Feedback" stuff. However given the web semantic of this search I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't the case.
It clearly isn't sending any local file information, and if you are wanting to just search files, this is an odd way of doing it.
