Windows 8 OEM

Just wondering if the OEM version is okay to use for the computer I have finished today so I can order it today?

OEM version is designed for system builders so your use case is perfectly suited to it. Something to be aware of though is that you might need to install it twice before it accepts your CD-Key, my OEM version of Windows 7 does that to me but when it takes only 13mins to install I'm not that bothered.

I don't like the Windows 8 user interface personally so I am sticking with Windows 7. Depends on your personal preference, if you don't mind the Windows 8 interface then it is a better operating system to get.

I would try before you buy, go in to a computer shop and have a feel of Win 8. It is not to everybody liking, Win 7 is solid, very well supported and has a classic feel of a having desk top.

Try the preview version of 8.1, quick and easy to install especially if you have an ssd. I run 8.1 on my old laptop, and 7 on the desktop, actually getting to the point where I prefer 8.1. If you have 8 it will be a free update when 8.1 is released. Which reminds me, must find cheapest place for a copy of win8.

Have to say I'm coming to like Windows 8 on my new laptop, but I don't think it'd work nearly as well without a touchpad. My laptop's touch pad is set to use Win 8 gestures, so you can get charms by swiping the right side, switch apps by swiping the left side, and get modern UI menus by swiping down at the top. However, even with a mouse it's less user-unfriendly than I though.

One of the big issues with trying it at a shop is that generally you'll be trying a laptop, which is a different usage experience to a desktop. Downloading the preview and trying that for a few weeks is a good idea - it gives you a chance to see if you can put up with the Win 8 way of doing things, and it means you can start using your new computer straight away
