    Question Upgrade to Office XP?

I am currently using Microsoft Office 2000, and because I am now a student, I MIGHT be able to get a cheaper (or even free!) version of office, which I assume will be XP. I would like to know if you think it would be worthwhile for me to upgrade and why.

What are the new features exactly?

I've heard both good and bad things about the new version - some say it runs smoothly, some say it doesn't. Some say they like this new clipboard thing (what's this?), some say they don't .

So basically, is it good to get, and can you turn any bad, or useless features off? (like pop-up side bar help things or whatever) As for the smoothness, I'm running what's in my sig with windows XP.

    Thanks

So far as I can tell, Office XP is just Office 2000 with a new front on it - but then again Office 2000 is basically the same as Office 97.

So my answer? Stick with 2000. They're both bascically the same, although 2000 comes with more Clipart

If you're going to upgrade, if you need to, it makes more sense to go to the latest version, 2003, as it will be a while (as in years) before the next version of Office is released according to the MS roadmap.

Compare versions of Office - a lot of the features in the Office suite are geared towards group working so aren't that vital to a lot of home users.

For me, I liked the junk mail filters in Outlook 2003, but I use so few of the features of the other apps I don't honestly know what the later versions do that much better

    My advice is...i'd downgrade.

Go back to Office 97, its what I use. No fuzzy interfaces trying to help you...its got all or most of the same features, never gives me any problems and I can load all the current stuff I do at UNI into it. I like the fact its a get-straight-on-with-it sort of program, wheras the newer versions try and help to much.

    Just my opinion anyway

I have Office XP, it's basically Office 2000 with a load of useless features I will never and intend not to use, such as various extra language bar options like, drawing with your mouse directly into a word document, writing with your mouse which will change to text, and built in voice to speech. By the time you've turned off all the useless extras, your using Office 2000.

Can't comment on 2003 but I presume it's much the same.

i use openoffice. cheaper than ms office, and for what the average home user does, it can do the job more than adequately.

some of the ui decisions i don't agree with, and i feel msoffice does them better, but openoffice does have some useful features not found in msoffice (such as exporting to pdf)

Dont bother. Office 2000 is the best version they have made so far itsa what i use, XP is sod all different (unless using the extra 7 power pint slide animations are of paramount importance).

Ive got Office 2003 waiting to be put on the network - ill let you know what thats like, but ive got a feeling its gonna be just extra makeup on an already perfect face.

I use office XP at home & 2000 & work. TBH there's no discernable difference in operation, XP just looks prettier. I say go for 2003 if you're going to upgrade.

I like outlook 2003 , but I'm not a heavy office user so I dont really use much of the rest of it.

open office is good for home use ( because its free against the £400 that a retail version of office 2k3 pro costs ! )
