word not opening!?

Word 2000 is not opening and giving me crash-outs. Does the info below permit finding out why? It's worked fine for months and suddenly not. I'm going back uninstalling recent Windows upgrades to see if they have caused the problem, but wondered if anyone else had any idea what's going on.

Machine runs Office 2000 and 2010 (legacy reasons in having both) and until now both have been fine.

Could be an update, could be something seemingly random like (computer wide) default printer setting or new network devices detected etc. Check devices and printers.

probably worth adding that excel 2000 and 2010 still working fine side-by-side

it could be that the default normal.dot template is corrupted, or the temp/autosave files that word creates when it crashes are corrupt and it tries to open/recover them on startup, it can't, so it crashes.

I have come across normal.dot problems many a time. Occasionally I have had to reinstall word to stop it regularly occurring.
