eac is one of the most popular free cd ripping tools, the main alternative is the Free cdex.

being free, there's no reason not to try it.

lame is an mp3 encoder, it produces the best sound mp3 is capable of doing, especially with the --alt-preset standard encode setting. mp3 itself isn't great, though.

latest version? dunno, try the eac website

EAC is still a beta but its been 100% stable for me just get the latest version, never had any major problems. You can get windows lame binaries from the second link.

    My lame options are :
    Code:
    -b 192 --cbr -m s --lowpass 19.5
That'll make 192kbps constant bitrate mp3s, can't really remember what the rest does but i've been using it for ages.

EAC is great as is Audiograbber. Or anything that can use the LAME encoder, which encodes excellent MP3s.

Absolutely brilliant software, makes the best quality MP3s because it does it all in secure mode which no other ripper can do yet.

It takes a little bit to set it up right, but once you have you wont regret it.

Do a search for coaster factory and eac, theyve got a good (although slightly out of date) setup guide.

Don't expect it to be quick though, because it's not the fastest ripper out there, but it will produce great results

Although for those of you who arent 'that' interested in super amazing quality i would suggest either

CDEX - nice and easy, quite quick
Winamp pro - supposidly makes good MP3s and is an all in one package

For those interested in 'super amazing quality' why are you using MP3??!

FLAC, Monkey's Audio, TTA, WMA Lossless... although support for these in portable music players is poor to say the least (go on iRiver - add support for WMA Lossless at least!)

    cheers,
