So whats everyone using ?

Is the win2k offering any good.... can it do a complete restore (with a boot disk) from one drive to another, looks like it can but I don't want to use it and find out too late that it doesn't work lol

Failing that I'm also interested in possibly using a usb 2.0 external drive caddy. Any software around to support this, obviously would need somekind of usb reading from dos in order to restore.

I use Drive Image 5 (or is it 6, one of them anyway) and its been flawless for me, boots from floppy so can be run in OS or in DOS

Havent tried the 2k one im afraid.

I noticed drive image as a possibilty, any idea if it has usb and/or network support to get to the images ?

I do like powerquest stuff, never had any problem when using magic so it is a definite option.

I know it has network support, sot sure about usb. i imagine 6 might have though, www.powerquest.com take a look there.

The current version is 7, it's WinPE based not DOS based. Network-based file restores are a breeze, just enter the path in standard \\machine\share\file format. Similarly it supports USB devices. Essentially if it's supported by XP, it's supported by DI7

What happens if you have total failure on a drive though, say a virus/magent/spilled coffee eats the boot sector nt kernel etc. Is there not an emergency DOS boot route to use for restoring ?

yeah, like i said. WinPE is MS's bootable XP version - a fully functional bootable XP. You boot the DI7 CD, it will boot Powerquest's version of WinPE (entitled PQRE). It has a full driver.cab, so any devices supported natively by XP are natively supported in PQRE. it'll first try & get a network adress via DHCP or prompt you for a static address if it fails on its DHCP lease, then it'll present you with a menu of things to do - back up, restore, a few emergency tools, etc.

The downside is it needs 256Mb of RAM just to boot...

drive image v7 download - 69euros = 47.98gbp

or

the physical version from dabs for 41.12gbp. So much for cutting out the middle men.
