I know you want some software to stick the photos on your own site but this is a free site with some nice gallery features that I have used to host some photos in the past.

    http://www.fotopic.ltd.uk/register/

    Lifted from the site....

An Internet photograph gallery, with admin control panel.
Thumbnailed, searchable listings of your photograph collections.
Web address for your gallery - eg. bobsphotos.fotopic.net - or use your own domain name.
Stamping of images with captions, dates, or your web address.
Ordering prints and gifts - including mugs, clocks, t-shirts and phone covers.
Weekly statistics on who's viewed your photographs.
Optional passwords on photos and collections to restrict access.
WAP gallery so you can access your photos from a mobile phone.
Direct linking of images from other websites.
    No intrusive adverts or popups.

Or at the other end of the spectrum, there's my 2 image galleries, http://shad.tv/stvgallery and STVG2 (not finished yet) at http://images.shad.tv/

Neither require databases, or cataloging (uses the file system) and both take aobut 5 minutes to setup. STVG2 will include auto thumnailing using .NET routines but this isn't implimented yet... Loads of new stuff in STVG2 though, and more when I get round to finishing it

it doesn't need mysql, no. I use it on my site, and I have to say it is really good. Another vote here anyway.
