I have just built myself a new system with sp2 installed and its nothing but a pain in the @rse. Should I just start again using SP1a.

if you don't like the security center i think it can be turned off from control panel > security center
well i really dont like sp2 , it doesent like my sisters pc , i get the hanging on boot thing so had to go back to sp1 but it has never had a virus since it has avg, avast, norton, spybot, windows firewall etc on it that might be the reason why, so as long as you have a up to date antivirus and a firewall you should be sorted.

Whats the problem wedge? You know you can turn off all of the additional security features?
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.
My problem is that my new A64 3400 setup is running slower than my bloody barton 2500 powered sn45g shuttle. I have the same memory and the same gfx card installed.

Its probably not sp2.

Well format the bugger and re do it with sp1 give it a testing then upgrade to sp2 if the same thing happens then its pretty hard not to suspect it is sp2
Why not Slipstream the SP2 update into your xp cd.
thats what i did and SP2 has caused me 0 problems.

I have updated my machine using a SP2 disk and thankfully have had few problems! People say that as long as you have a strong firewall and antivirus you don't need it. I thought that your set-up was only as strong as the weakest link and if the Operating system is at risk surely bad stuff will get threw?
Some friends who haven't been able to get hardware to work since SP2 are going to run without it.
Your thoughts please.

I did use a slipstreamed version of xp with sp2 on it.

What is slipstreaming?
basically its integrating the sp2 update into your windows xp installation so that you do not need to install sp2 seperately.Originally Posted by littlewill
also i slipstreamed sp2 from the original xp with no sp1. I think this is the best way rather that slipstreaming sp2 from a sp1 cd. (?)
