    Web Hosting with Go Daddy

Already got a domain parked there, so I'm looking to upgrade to their website hosting package (seems reasonable for a year at the moment) as opposed to their web builder package.

Now, it's a long time since I've looked at these things, so what is the current thinking on CMS platforms?

They have an extensive list of installable apps, including the usual Wordpress, Jumla, and Drupal. I'll be moving my wifes blog from Blogger I think as well as having other content and eventually a shopping cart system.

Is Wordpress the biggest because it's good? Or are the others worth looking into instead?

From what I remember Drupal is meant it be one of the better CMS systems but WordPress is very versatile and has a large user base with a lot of support.

Re: Web Hosting with Go Daddy

Wordpress is very good for what it was designed to be, a blogging platform. It's been hammered and extended to fit a lot of new holes (ecommerce, community features etc) with it's huge range of plugins, but I personally don't think it does anything else particularly well.

Having said that, you can get reasonable eCommerce plugins, nice themes and other packages that add functionality and it's quite user friendly. Reading your requirements it's probably your best choice (I've used both Joomla and Drupal before and they are both awful, in my opinion).

I've had good experiences with concrete5 and particularly typo3, but they are a bit more developer-orientated so might be out of scope for your needs.

Re: Web Hosting with Go Daddy

I'm after something that is flexible and easy enough to use. Gone are the days I have time to get involved with the nitty gritty of web development.

I've read some good things about Joomla and Drupal, but also read some terrible things too. Comments about Wordpress seem to be a lot more positive.

I think I need to just get my finger out and set up the hosting and have a play around. Thanks for the input

Re: Web Hosting with Go Daddy

WordPress is definitely easier to get going out of the box so to speak.

Drupal takes a fair bit of time to suss out after the initial install.

GoDaddy have launched a UK site. None of the promo codes I google and use before renewal that I have been doing for years don't work on the Uk site!

Now, I have to use a proxy, go to their US site and then apply the promo codes.

    Bast**ds!

Re: Web Hosting with Go Daddy

I've heard a lot of horror stories about GoDaddy. I was with DreamHost for years and they were brilliant, plus they do some great offers.

Wordpress is very good and very flexible if you know what you're doing. It also has a large community behind it so there's lots of support, mods and themes.

I'm quite happy with QiQ - service has been good when needed (which hasn't been very often). Certainly no complaints here.

Re: Web Hosting with Go Daddy

My experience with GoDaddy hosting is that sometimes it can get really laggy. That's both web hosting and virtual machine, they appears to be over subscribed.

Or maybe because the server is based in US, not sure, but I got out of there in one year.

Word of warning, if you host anything that may hit data protection of users, you may hit European rules for hosting such data abroad.
