    .PNGs

    Hmmm, not sure whether this is the right place or not, but it's to do with applications so I'll stick it in here

    Anyway, I was playing around with some screenshots for schoolwork, but when saving the screenshots as either .gifs or .jpgs, I always got some picture deterioration, and .bmps are stupidly big, so I decided to try using .pngs. The interesting thing is these seem to maintain the picture quality better than .gifs and .jpgs, and they always seem to be smaller as well.

    So my question is this: is there actually any advantage to using .gifs and .jpgs compared to .pngs? Or is it just that .gifs and .jpgs are more common and well-known?

    Some browsers basically meaning IE..

    It really depends on what you're doing really, gifs usually go to smaller file sizes for small images and .jpg files are usually smaller for large images (if you don't mind the degradation)

    In many ways the .png format is the middle ground
