    Yet another Linux thread

Yes I know that's what I hear you groan

I'm looking for a Linux distro for my server.

Basically it needs to be able to set up shared resources to Windows machines (Folders, with passwords and shared printers) and also have some kind of remote access (at the moment on my windows machine i'm using Real VNC)

Will PHP and MySQL work on a Linux distro? (I use my server to test my PHP an MySQL stuff aswell)

    Thanks a lot guys

Any Linux distro will do all that. Samba allows you to share folders and printers with Windows machines, remote access can be done with VNC or (my preference) just a remote console via SSH.

PHP and MySQL are open source, do they work on a Linux distro? Bears, woods and poo spring to mind.

Just been looking at Samba, appears it's only a daemon for Unix/Linux.

    Need a distro now.

Basically something minimal and I can run Samba (and use SWAT to admin it I believe)

So, a small distro please and nothing like Debain where you have to download lots of different packages, all on 1 or 2 CD's if possible.

    Thanks

you only have to download lots and lots of packages with deb if you plan on using lots and lots of things, the standard install is gona be less than one cd if all you want todo is those basic tasks.
er, if your northbridge fan is humming loudly, disconnect it. _dont_ kick the side of the case, it _will_ break it.
    i know :/

Fedora Core is popular and free and will do all that stuff with the basic install.
Ubuntu seems to be the "in" distro at the moment.
SuSE or Mandrake are very easy to use, but they're more commercial - tend to ask for donations, etc.

You're not asking much, really, so pretty much any distro will do you. Check out www.linuxiso.org and give one a go!

I have heard good things about SME server. I have never used it before, so not sure if it will meet your needs.
    Take a look.

As for php and mysql you can install these along with Apache. As for connecting remotely - yup, sshing in is the bomb

I got a question, but don't mean to hi-jack this : what's good for setting up a VPN server on a linux box?

The problem is my router will control the net and port forward a SINGLE port to my server which has the VPN listening on that. I don't want anything else like fancy firewalls etc - so would SmoothWall cut it?

    more CC pimping

clarkconnect has PPTP modules to run in gateway mode.

if you have a running RRAS service on your box , why would you want more ?

RRAS? You lost me there If this is some acronym for remote access via ssh, well I don't like the idea of sshing over the net since I've disabled the PSK access and if it was over VPN it'll be like I'm logging in locally, and it's all encrypted.
