Best video codec for encoding in HD

I have a few videos I am trying to encode in 1920X1080 in HD.
I am looking for something that will retain good quality but also not create a huge end file.
    Any tips ?

    I am using Wondershare Video editor and played aroudn with H264 MP4 and a 1h 20 m file was about 5GB !

I'll have to have a look at those too. I've always struggled with video files being too big

If you want 1080p at a decent bitrate then it's going to be big.
5gb for 1h20min doesn't sound big to me.

    What bitrate?

Re: Best video codec for encoding in HD

you know handbrake and super aren't codecs right? OP, I've always found x264 to give a reasonable trade off between watchability and filesize, a hour program (so really 40 minutes ish) is generally in the 1GB region depending on the compression settings. Exactly how much you can compress it depends on the content (fast moving stuff is generally difficult to compress highly without artifacts) I'd suggest trying out handbrakes constant quality settings on x264. At about 22 you should be seeing film sizes in the region of 5GB (assuming you're only keeping say 160kbit stereo with it). The constant quality settings will compress static scenes more heavily than moving ones, giving better overall file sizes.

You might want to also consider pulling the credits etc off and if its for a tablet running at 720p, I'd be surprised if you can tell a lot of difference.

Re: Best video codec for encoding in HD

OK. You need to decide on two things, really:

    • Do I want files which are highly compressed, or which play everywhere?
    • How much quality do I need?

For the former, that's where you're picking a codec. There's only one codec which works "everywhere", H.264. Beyond that there's WebM or VC-1 (Windows Media Video), and more fringe choices like Dirac. The rare codecs might compress better, but you'll find it tough to play them back on anything that's not a PC.

H.264 is probably the right choice in 95% of cases.

Now, the quality question. This is a slider, really. 5GB for 1h20 of 1080p video is 3.75GB/h, or 8Mb/sec - which is about the same as a 576i DVD. Satellite HD video (usually 1080i) is about 18Mb/sec tops. Blu-Ray might be 15-35Mb/sec on average.

The more quality you want (especially for motion, especially for motion encompassing large parts of the screen), the higher the bitrate you should set, unless you don't mind serious quality issues. Something like cel-shaded animation will need a far lower bitrate than something that fills a screen with movement like explosions.

Re: Best video codec for encoding in HD

H.265 is the sucessor to H.264 and may offer better quality at higher compression ratios. However, while there are software implementations around, it is still early days.

If you want a simple way of encoding a raw video stream, you may want to look at this...

    http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/uk/p.../videorecorder

This will take component video and encode it to H.264. (Mac OSX only)

    If you need greater versatility:

    http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/uk/p...264prorecorder

They are probably about as good as you can get without spending a lot of money. It includes Media Express software which is both Windows and Mac OSX
