    Win7 SP1 dumb question...

    Heya,

Got a bit of a Noob question, if I may?

I'm doing my new self-build, but this is actually my first time installing Windows myself. I've installed Win7 Home 64-bit successfully, so all is well with that.
However, I'm having difficulties getting Service Pack 1 sorted.

1/. I tried letting Windows auto-update do it, but it keeps failing.
Powering on, the system tells me it's configuring Service Pack. It takes about an hour from 9% to reach 14% before restarting, but then repeats this a couple of times before telling me the install failed. It then periodically bugs me about updating Windows. If I enable the update, it schedules it for next power-up and does the same as above.

2/. I then thought to download SP1 from Microsoft's website and manually install the SP. I had the option of an ISO file and several MSI ones. Supposedly I should choose the x64 files, which I assume are the ones that say blahblah64.blah in the filenames, usually 'symbols' files?
However, running the ISO and attempting the MSIs, the former doesn't seem to change anything on my System Properties screen and the MSIs obviously need me to know where the thousands of resulting symbols folders should belong (not in the C: root, where it initially attempted).

Do I need to install these in a particular order/directory?
Have I got all the right files?

I've had a trawl through the MS forum/help pages but haven't found anything that seems to answer or relate to my queries.

Could anyone here please advise or perhaps whack up/direct me to a quick plain-language Idiot's Guide for me, please?

    Thanks for your time,
    Tasky.

When it fails if should give you an error code - do you know what it is? It'll be in the same window that lets you know it's not been successful.

    Thanks for your time,

Save yourself some hassle and get this - windows 7 x64 with SP1 integrated. These are official microsoft releases and are 100% legit (I'm currently using it). You can use your own windows key to activate.
Use this to make a bootable dvd/usb and your set...

Edit: looks like there's an even newer release containing further updates available here.

    Re: Win7 SP1 dumb question...

as above use the ms pre-prepared iso with the patch built in. I remember when sp1 first came out it met with some disdain and comments that it caused some problems. I never bothered installing it. Should I reconsider?

    Re: Win7 SP1 dumb question...

Definitely; Windows 7 SP1 was released almost two years ago. As a result of that release, Windows 7 RTM (with no service pack) will no longer be supported as of April 9th, 2013, following the standard Windows support lifecycle specifying that support ends 24 months after the release of a new service pack.

Never had any bother with it myself.

    Re: Win7 SP1 dumb question...

Found the issue - Had forgotten to reset my AMD Catalyst after unlocking my graphics card. Not sure why that was a problem, but it cleared up fine!

Bookmarking links for future reference, though.

    Thanks very much, guys!!
