Links open in notepad, win 7

    Hello hexites.
I've got a rather annoying problem that means some of the links i try and open do so in notepad.
For example, the pic below is what happens if i open steam and click 'visit the website' But if i look at steam through a browser rather than the steam program it does work.
    Any ideas?

Looks like if your default programs setting has been changed. Have a look through Default Programs section of control panel to see if there anything redirecting website to notepad.

^ this, he's a faster typer. I checked in my Steam and Firefox. Links here are fine for that page. Did you check the associations in 'Default programs' for both webpages & shortcuts?

Thanks for the responce guys, i'll be honest. Although i've built my own computers this has never been a problem and therefor not entirely clued up on this.
I checked the defualt programs that open in notepad and these are the file types currently set.

    .compositefont
    .css
    .dll
    .inf
    .ini
    .log
    .psd1
    .psm1
    .scp
    .sct
    .txt
    .wsc
    .wtx

To change the current program you need to select a new program and i might need guidance if any need changing ;-)

OK you should look at your default browser (whatever that is). It should probably have the following selected at least:

    Extensions
    .htm
    .html

    Protocols
    FTP
    HTTP
    HTTPS

If other stuff is selected then that's fine too.

The next place to look is actually Internet Explorer, whether you use it or not. Make sure that it has .url selected.

You may need to logout or reboot, not sure if the shortcut change needs it.

Re: Links open in notepad, win 7

Ahh, thanks guys. The problems with internet explorer. I run FF and IE so different members of the house use different browsers and have all thier own bookmarks when on the internet. I just changed the default browser to FF and it works, so i can take a look at IE now in my own time now the problem is fixed.
Thanks alot for your help guys
