    Bizarre hanging problem

    Hello,

I recently built a new PC for a family member with the following main spec:

    -Asus Gryphon Z87
    -Crucial Tactical 1600MHz 2x8GB
    -EVGA GTX 660 2GB
    -Intel i5 4440
-OS installed on a Crucial SSD M500 240GB
    -Windows 7 64-bit

I'm having a bizarre storage related issue however. I have the PC connected to an NAS through the router, and recently had to copy a bunch of stuff from it over to the PC. Most files work fine, however, there are a few specific files that will copy to the PC fine, but when I try to actually access them the Window will crash, prompting me to restart the Windows Explorer process. Explorer closes, then will not come back. The only way to shut down the PC is through the power switch. This happens whether I try to access the files from the PC, or directly from the NAS through the connection to that PC. I thought it may be corrupted files, however, I can access the files with no issue at all from other PCs connected to the NAS.

Any ideas what could be going on? Something else I've noticed too is that occasionally when I try access something on the system drives, nothing will happen for a short while (no HDD activity light), then it will suddenly open without issue. Also most of the time the login process is very quick (flashes past the welcome screen), but again occasionally it will stay on the "logging on" loading screen for 5-10 seconds without HDD activity, then continue. Could it be related?

    Would appreciate any input, thanks!

sounds like a failing disk to me - is there just the one disk in your machine, and if so can you try it on a different SATA port? Are there any errors written to your event log?

    Thanks for your response Splash.

There is another 1TB HDD in the machine for games, but that's it. I'm not sure if I am looking in the right place (Event Viewer under Admin Tools), but I don't see any errors written to the logs. Is there something specific I should be looking at/for?

Run Chkdsk /r on each disk (the system drive will require a reboot) - if it finds any filesystem errors it will attempt to repair them. If it's unable to do so I'd be tempted to get the vendor's disk checking tools and run the affected disk through it: if you're under warranty it may be RMA time.

HD Tune is pretty good for viewing the SMART data and running an error check and benchmark. Free version does all you need most of the time.

    Re: Bizarre hanging problem

Sorry for the late response guys.

I have checked the SMART data for both drives (the system drive is the SSD Crucial) using Crystal Disk Info:

    Does that all look OK?

SMART won't show you filesystem issues, you need chkdsk for that.

    Re: Bizarre hanging problem

Sorry, forgot to mention that also. I ran the check (at boot up) and there didn't seem to be any issues. Although it took a few hours and so I couldn't wait around to see the report at the end of it (the system continues to boot into Windows without any user input), I didn't see any dialog boxes or warnings when I returned to the PC. It hasn't made any difference to the issues though.

I don't think the files themselves that are on the NAS are corrupt, as I can access them with no problem from another PC.

With regards to the general issues with the system being slow to respond with no HDD activity etc, I'm wondering if this can simply be down to using aggressive power saving options in Windows and at the BIOS level? I think I have all the options enabled, including those relevant to the DMI and also LSPM. If those can be explained that way, it would simplify things leaving only the issue with those specific files on the NAS.
