    Windows Licensing

Have been toying with the idea of building some pcs to sell for beer tokens and was wondering about the installation of software. Obviously i want the thing to be above board so i don't want to install pirate software - and i can't afford to buy a copy of windows for every pc. Can i use my own copy of Windows and just buy another license for a new install?

i tend to install xp (corp version) and then tell the person who i have built the pc for, they need a licence to be legal, then it's not my prob, i will make them sign if i don't know them aswell.

you _HAVE_ to supply a licensed windows, if at all. microsoft won';t sell you the raw licenses in volumes of less than a few hundred thousand, so you have to buy OEM copies of windows for each machine.

the oem license restrictiosn include that the cd key _MUST_ be stuck to the case, and that you _MUST_ install certain components

Speaking from experience, i wouldnt bother trying to make a business out of it mate.

Not worth it Ghost_Dog - you'll never be able to complete with tier 1 manufacturers like dell without going all illegal on the licenceing front.

The small profit you may make WILL be eaten up with any RMA's that happen to happen. And they will happen.

you listening? Dont do it matey no money to be made.

OEM XP should be ok with a reinstall if its just the hard drive being upgraded. The XP Update site should'nt have a problem with just that. But if its a new mobo and cpu at the same time, it will throw a dicky fit and reject your update requests.

OEM dies with a machine. Simple as.

yep, i get asked to build pc's all the time, and i say if you need the full whack and wanna be legal, then i say goto dell.... if they need a upgrade or just a box and have some form of os then i do a job for them, but to be legal as the two above have posted, no money in it mate! big companies can chuck so much in and give 3 years cover, it's a tough market

    I'll second the RMA thing...

It's the single biggest pain in the ass ever. Everything is your fault, it needs to be fixed yesterday, you are 24/7 tech support on the phone and generally you are expected to gear your life around fixing damn PCs.

Yes the little £40 or £50 for the build is great at the start but it is no where near worth it after the hours you have to put in subsequently.

which is a) encouraging piracy, and b) still makes your system uncompetitive compared to a dell which comes with the full, real os

unless you can organise a single standard build, and have spares on site - then no, can't really do it. it's a tough way of making money unless you've got some serious infrastructure. mate of mine tried to do it, and being a bit useless, he found himself out of pocket by a couple of grand.

Its quite easy to do over ebay, you just have to set your terms + conditions right and be serious about it - buy in bulk [dont goto a normal shop like ocuk etc]. It can be done fairly easily if you put the effor it.

in most cases someone like dell will out do you price for price, chucking in a free copy of works and xp plus a printer or double memory, they always seem to have a deal, a godo way to make mnoney on computer builds is to do something a bit diffirent such as shuttles, i have made a few of them up, just order the stuff and charge £30 to build.
