Hard drive gone?

Hi i am running a ubuntu server version 12 at home and notice frequent lockups and freezes with the server.

i did a couple of reboots due to have this issue complaining about an i/o error and was wondering if it is the hard drive that's gone or maybe loose wire or issues with my seasonic PSU?

Any suggestions? Could it just be the OS acting funny?

It isn't the OS acting funny!

You are getting multiple reports of disk errors, and while I am not an expert in interpreting file system error messages, it looks like inconsistency in the file system.

If the system does boot randomly, you might try changing the data cable, and possibly the power connector too.

Ext4 is quite resilient, so you may be lucky and it will recover, you might want to boot into single user/rescue mode and run fsck though.

If you can get it to boot, a look at the SMART data might indicate if it is a drive or interface error.

What's the drive? Is it dropping from the BIOS too?

It might be the drive, or the SATA cable. But it's definitely a physical issue

Its an old sata mechanical 500gb seagate hdd

i think its dead.

i tried different PSU power cables and different SATA cables and still i get the same error

Boot from a live linux CD, and try a "smartctl -a /dev/sdd" which will tell you what SMART thinks of it. I suspect it thinks bad things

Yup, sounds like the Norwegian Blue of hard drives.

Time to dig out the backup.

It is an ex-hard drive, it has ceased to be, it is no more.
