I used to use AVG but now I use Avast and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Avast is much better than AVG IMO.
Avast like some others
My vote goes for Immunet and Avira. These are some of the best light weight antivirus that you can use for free. I was using Avira in past but recently I switched to Immunet. I am quite satisfied with the performance as well as security of both these tools.
Housecall seems pretty handy. I had never heard of it before to so cheers Zak33. MSE is probably the best free one in that it is truly free. It is also very simple for the less technologically inclined folk.
Actually it won't for another year and a half. Apparently, the program itself won't be downloadable after 8 April 2014, however.
PC Pro's recent AV test put Avast far enough ahead of AVG for me to switch my subsiduary machines to that.
I use Malwarebytes occasionally and for post-event cleaning if needed.
That said I still buy AV for my main machines as the level of protection is usually better. Afterall £10/PC/year when it's all yer stuff isn't exactly alot.

I don't recommend MS Security Essentials. It doesn't do well in tests. It has failed in anti-virus certifications. I am even sure Microsoft said it no longer recommends people using it.
Personaly I use Avast Free version without any problems. AVG free was good but had a run in with few false positives which has put me off it for now.
The best way to pick would be to look at the recent AV tests as the best anti-virus software is always changing. At the moment I think Kaspersky is at top but expensive.
I recommend using either AVG or Avira .Personally I prefer Avira since it is quick and takes up very few CPU resources.
I am using avast.
I am using Avast Free
Comodo! (if you don't mind too many pop-ups in first week or so).
It comes as the whole "Internet Security" suite, and it's free.
My only gripe with it is the interface is a bit weird in the latest version, but it seems to always pick everything up.
Otherwise, as others have said, MSE, because it's lightweight and doesn't cause problems, but I did read somewhere that it failed to get some sort of accreditation because it picked up so few items.
My choice is AVG. AVG Free Antivirus is the best free antivirus there is. It got rid of every virus I have ever had. It has worked really good for me, even better than the paid version of Norton, McAfee, and many others. AVG detects threats while you are surfing on your browser, protecting you from lots of threats that run as soon as you click on the website link! My computer has never had a virus since I had AVG, and without AVG, I probably would have had multiple.
One of the best new features AVG AntiVirus Free. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is trusted antivirus and antispyware protection for Windows available to download for free.
