    Exchange/Outlook Problem

    Hey guys, hope you can shed some light on my little problem

    One of our clients, who are running Windows 2003 Small Business Server (All clients have Outlook 2003) are having the headers stripped from ALL external email (ie, the "From" and "Cc" bits are there, but there is no information in them) Also, they have another problem, some emails are recived twice. Any help muchly appriciated

    Thanks,

    Craig

    The first thing I'd say is to get them to re-run the Internet connection wizard and run through the mail set up again.

    Is it definately happening on ALL external mail? How are they collecting it? Driect SMTP or pop pickup?

    Hi Jiff,

    Yeah it is happening on ALL external mail, the mail is being retrieved from a POP3 server too

    I will try and re-run the internet connection setup wizard

    Cheers,

    Craig

    any word on that? and are you sure they're all running outlook 2003 - rather than a couple of users connecting to exchange sbs over pop3 on outlook 2002.
    heard of a similar problem yesterday which was exactly that - unpatched 2002 connecting over pop3 to exchange (in the same office, which is a bit pointless!) if the duplicates show up in outlook web access?

    All users are definatly using Outlook 2003, its the version that comes with SBS 2003 (Auto-installs when you do connectcomputer) And yup, the duplicates are still coming in, and they still cannot see the To: and Cc: fields No word from anywhere yet!

    are they running outlook in exchange mode or pop3?
    also - in c:\program files\excrsrvr\mdbdata\ - check the transaction log files and see if the headers are intact in there. if they're intact there, then you may have a more interesting problem. also - have you tried using etrn to contact the remote pop3 store. apparently this is quite a common problem - and may require changes on your hosts pop3 account.
    why aren't they getting the mail sent directly over smtp? easier to administer? (unless they're on dialup)

    right... steps

    login to pop3 over telnet and inspect the mail headers manually
    i.e. from cmd -> telnet servername 110 -> user (username) -> pass (password) ->
    stat -> top 1 10
    retreives the first 10 lines of message 1
    repeat for as many messages as you desire to determine if the header corruption is occurring on the host (as opposed to exchange) can be due to mis-configured spam assassin or similar
    if headers are intact on host, then examine the log files on the exchange server. the log files (found in directory listed above) are an exact copy of what's been retreived by the exchange server - before processing by the message store.
    Also - check the pop3 connector error log (all errors should be reported to the event viewer)
    I'm going out shortly, but feel free to e-mail me, or pm me, and I'll give you my mobile number to help you troubleshoot.
