odd lag

Hoping someone may know this one, I reinstalled windows a few weeks ago and ever since I've had a lag while trying to do things like open files and folders/ empty recycle bin even going to in the partitions is lagging (hand cursor shows)

Not sure how to explain it but it's like running a old pc again, from what I can tell its only affecting my HDD as the SSD seems to respond fine

Any help would be great as google is failing me

is it set to spin the disk down? power options>advanced options>disk set it to some sensible period (mine is 5 minutes, but I rarely use it.)

guessing windows is on the SSD,
so when you reinstalled it formatted that properly and all the files on it are new, so therefore have the correct security user permissions assigned.
and your HDD had all your old files on that you backed up (word docs, steam games and stuff like that) so they would have a different user assigned to their security permissions.

so when you open the folder, windows then assigns the new user permissions from the new windows install onto the old files. hence the lag.

or it could be reindexing them as you open the folders.

Storage drivers would be another thing to consider, especially if the motherboard has an additional SATA controller.

That was the issue, should have picked that up myself!

Here are few more suggestions:
Check the HDD with gsmartcontrol.
Download process explorer and check for hardware interrupts (drivers).
Try a latency monitoring program.

Seemed fine for a while after a reset them all but just started again
