Haven't had a chance to play around with downloading the 8.1 install... but physical disk turned up this morning so will hopefully have a workable pc by the end of the day :)
Will have the weekend to work out how to set the system up!

:) Have fun with it. Not sure if you know, Windows 8.1 has .NET Framework 4.5 installed by default but does not have 3.5 installed. If you need .NET Framework 3.5 as some application depends on it, go to Windows Features to add and downloads it from Windows Update.
Thanks for that. Machine up and running - installed everything very nicely. Will dig out .NET and run the DX9 web installer when I get the chance.
iSRT was a doddle to configure, think it took about 3 or 4 clicks!
Haven't had the chance to do any real testing, but seems solid at the moment.

Aero glass is gone! -1
3rd party tool available to enable transparency, but the toolbars become completely transparent and when one toolbar is stacked on top of another, it's utterly confusing. -1
Metro menu exists and you can't change it back to the old way -1
All in all, I could ignore a few things and live with it but I prefer perfection and will stick with Windows 7
Classic shell installed, boot directly to desktop....
Gotta say it feels like Win7 to me now. Need to stick in a scratch disk, graphics card and tidy up the cabling and work out how to disguise the fans on the roof (grr 550D!) and we're done!
