    32bit to 64bit Windows 7

I have a copy of Windows 7 Professional (32bit) on my primary computer. For obvious reasons, this is not ideal for gaming, especially with new titles requiring more and more RAM. Is it possible to upgrade in any way from 32bit to 64bit without having to buy a separate copy?

iirc OEM keys are valid for both, but only include media for one.

    Re: 32bit to 64bit Windows 7

I think your best bet would be to ask Microsoft. I do know that the OEM copies are tied into your motherboard though, and I imagine they probably have other restrictions (so if it was a "no" I wouldn't be surprised).

Have you checked that your hardware is capable of running 64-bit by the way? If it isn't and you end up having to replace the motherboard you would most likely need to get a new copy of Windows anyway (I've heard people say they've managed to get an OEM copy moved over to a new motherboard, but only by venturing through customer support line hell).

If directhex is right that you get keys for both but only the media for one also, I imagine you can call them up for a replacement disk and just ask for 64 bit. Worth a shot.

    Good luck!

My hardware is capable, I have a x64 proccessor. I'll try that anyways, thanks!

Be aware that you'll need to do a complete reinstall of Windows as it's not possible to directly upgrade from 32 to 64 bit.

    Re: 32bit to 64bit Windows 7

My HP laptop (more of a netbook really) came with Windows 7 home 32 bit. I used a 64 bit media to re install, used the same key stuck inside the machine that HP shipped to me. I had to do the phoning Microsoft thing for activation, but it was activated fine and has been happily working as 64 bit for years now.

So it was a bit of a pain, but worth it (ram was cheaper then, 6GB isn't bad for a netbook!).
