Yeah my WebOS device uses Linux so I have "tried" out doing things. It is somewhat. Course, I don't know the ins and outs of Linux nor really understand how it really works.

Yeah networking wise was one major reason for me to really want to delve into Linux but as with everything a learning process. Been comfy with Windows far too long and to be perfectly honest the newer versions of Windows takes the "computer geek" away from us all because everything is automatic and "simple". Which I hate.

Been thinking of dual booting with Debian for a while; just a lot of Linux/Unix versions out there which confuse the heck out of me I can't remember last time I've needed to flick up the command prompt to do some work. Something which I miss. My knowledge on operating systems have somewhat diminished (I'll blame the simplicity of Windows 7 for that ).
"If at first you don't succeed; call it version 1.0" ||| "I'm not interrupting you, I'm putting our conversation in full-duplex mode" ||| "The problem with UDP joke: I don't get half of them"
"I’d tell you the one about the CIDR block, but you’re too classy" ||| "There’s no place like 127.0.0.1" ||| "I made an NTP joke once. The timing was perfect."
"In high society, TCP is more welcome than UDP. At least it knows a proper handshake."

They aren't versions, the word "Flavours" works quite well. We use Debian at work, it works fine. I have traditionally stuck with Fedora because it is a workstation version of Red Hat, and Red Hat Enterprise is what powers most servers. Frankly, it probably doesn't matter that much which one you go for.

I would recommend playing with one of the bootable CD/flash drive installs to start with. I would also recommend using the KDE desktop. I have no idea why distros shop with Gnome as the default, I don't know anyone that likes it. Don't expect to be gaming on it though

Because they're the same underlying OS (as is Vista) - i.e. they're all Windows NT 6.X. As DanceswithUnix says a bit after you posed this question:
Don't make the common mistake of confusing the windowing front end for an OS.
Yes, the GUI for Windows 8 has some significant differences from Windows 7, but the underlying OS is basically the same. And once you start a game, your window manager is utterly irrelevant because all the UI is handled by the game. In the terms the question is phrased, it makes a lot of sense to wrap Vista/7/8/8.1 together.

Incidentally, for legacy games Win 8 seems to have fixed a number of rendering problems that Win 7 had with older engines. Being able to play StarCraft without getting a headache from the odd rendering issues is virtual worth putting up with MUI all on its own
