    XP upgrade routes for atom

    I have a old(ish) SAMSUNG NC10 (1GB memory) running XP.

Is there any value dropping money on Win7 for this machine?

It has started getting more use lately as I started communting further and I don't really want to shell out for a hardware upgrade when it covers the basics I need while travelling -Excel, Word.

    Thanks.

I used to have W7 on my NC10 and it ran as well as XP did. You could upgrade to 2GB for under £20 which would give a noticeable improvement.
If I remember correctly the Atom is a 32 bit cpu so you will need 32 bit W7. Someone might correct me on this.

Alternatively if you can get away with OpenOffice, LibreOffice or similar then have a look at a lightweight linux install and save your cash.

    Thanks.

I never did get around to upgrading the RAM -despite there being a healthy NC10 community a while back (I remember a touch screen overlay being available for it). I'll have a go over the weekend and give it a trial run before the grace period runs out.

My sister's NC10 runs W7. It runs just as well as XP did, i.e. darn slow. Max out memory to make it less painful.

I'll go out on a limb and say XP hasn't immediately become unusable because support has ended, as long as you're sensible when it comes to security, and keep an eye out for any potential serious security problems in the future. TBH even then, it might simply be a case of disabling some otherwise useless feature rather than needing a patch to make it safe.

Personally I'm not sure I could justify the cost of W7 to upgrade an Atom system, and I'd certainly be giving a Linux distro some consideration as Chris-UK suggested before shelling out any cash.

I've been looking over the Linux options but I'm not sure I can commit time to learn another eco system for one machine, a dinky atom at that.

I’m ashamed to say Microsoft got the full buy in from me of after the hate that was IBM OS2 Warp. I had to use OSX but I feel like I wanted more control than Apple where willing to offer.
