    win 98 to xp pro

I am installing xp to my lappy and have some files that I need to save on my laptop. If I use part magic to make a small NTFS are on my laptop and move the jpegs and work files into that, then install xp pro onto my main partition will the files that I moved still work ?

    TIA

Yep, should do... Create the NTFS partition, copy your files to it, then install XP and set it to format and then install on the main partition...

Having said that... It's probably not likely, but if you have a custom XP CD, or a manufacturer's disk, it might be set to auto-partition, in which case it would delete all partitions automatically and set up a new one (I think)... maybe someone else can confirm that? But if you've got a standard CD, you'll be fine...

you can't create an NTFS partition to do it - windows 98 can't understand NTFS, so you wouldn't be able to copy files to it

you want a small FAT32 partition

Just go FAT32. Both XP and 98 can read it and you will have no wories about encription or whatnot.
