    Windows activation

Hi all, hope this in the right section.

My motherboard died recently and I have ordered a new one ( with a new CPU) which will hopefully be arriving tomorrow.

From what I've found out online, I will need to re activate my copy of windows 7 . Would this delete or affect any of the files\documents I have on my hard drive ?

As the motherboard died suddenly, I didn't have time to back up all my recent documents.

    Re: Windows activation

Reactivating won't affect your saved documents, reinstalling might, but you shouldn't need to do that.

Worst case scenario, the files can still be accessed from the drive without Windows.

    Re: Windows activation

i would of thought you might have difficulty activating though, a new MB + CPU could classify to Microsoft as a new PC/license?

    Re: Windows activation

It depends on whether it was an OEM licence or not. You will probably need to phone the activation line though

Faulty can be replaced and still valid. It's in the EULA.

If it's retail, it's not a worry anyway.

Thanks for the responses guys, very much appreciated.

I'm presuming I have the oem version, as it was the version that came with the computer when I brought it from Overclockers a few years ago.

    Re: Windows activation new MoBo

I'm about to have the same issue, replacing my Mobo using an OEM windows 7. When I plug my windows boot drive, will it work and I'll just need to provide a new license key? Or will I need to do a whole new install with a new license key? As my last mobo died after many years service will MS let me transfer my old OEM license to the new board?

    Re: Windows activation

Depends how different the motherboards are. If you're replacing with the same then it should be fine as the drivers will all work. If not, it'll probably work, but might complain a bit.

As the posts above yours say, if you're replacing motherboard due to failure MS will let you transfer the license.

Not sure about recent times but I always found ringing MS and acting dumb (I got my PC back from repair and it's now saying Windows need to activate) always worked with OEM licenses.

But that would be fraudulent if you were using it to get around license agreements.

Well, your effectively telling the truth.....and it's less fraudulent than running one of the many SLIC loaders or KMS emulators!

    Re: Windows activation

I have used my OEM Windows 7 Activation on three motherboards once with spinning hard drive and twice with a SSD drive !
Basically the same with my boy's comps about three times over (with different numbers and one being an old laptop number) and only once where i had an online activation fail only to ring there auto service to get that activated with no problems ...

I installed my new mobo, Asus Z97 upgraded from an Asus X58, an hit activate windows.
No problem, it just accepted it online, no need for phone calls or codes.
    Such a relief.

    Re: Windows activation

Good to hear, Microsoft's checks can be a nightmare sometimes, I had a terrible experience upgrading from XP to 7. I had thought only OEM checked hardware but saw on their official support forums one of the MS responses mentioned they check a range of hardware. Presumably since most your setup still matched the system just accepted it without hassle.

    Re: Windows activation

I was a little worried about some things said here as I was about to clone the SATA disk on my old rig onto an older IDE Disk so that I could recycle the former into my new build. I wanted Vista to remain working on the old box and so was concerned that I wouldn't be able to get Vista going on the replacement disk without re-activation.

However, I used a trial version of a programme called Win Merge to clone the former disk onto the latter, removed the latter and started up - no problems whatsoever, Vista booted as if it always had off that disk.
