What programs couldn't you live with out?

List the most important apps you use on a daily basis starting with the most important obviously... And in a brief description tell us why they are most important to you...

    1. Creative MediaSource Player
    2. Mozilla Firefox
    3. Alcohol 120%
    4. BitTornado
    5. WinRar
    6. Adobe Photoshop 7.0

Well lets see, I couldn't use my PC without having music to listen to so the media player is a must! As for FireFox.. Without it I couldn't post! Alcohol 120% I use for all my CD images, I simply could'nt live without it! BitTornado is always handy... And lets not forget WinRar! This is by far the best ziping and extracting app know to man! Now Photoshop needs no explanation...

    So, whos next?

the interesting thing with linux is that every app has at least once direct equivalent. if i say 'i can't live without gaim', i'd be lying, as there's miranda or kopete to do the same thing. mplayer? i could use xine or videolan. probably the LEAST replacable is rdesktop, for connecting to windows terminal services, and gnucash for managing my finances

Firefox, TrueLaunchBar, Trillian, Textpad/Editplus & Media Player Classic are the utils that get installed straight away whenever I have to move to or use another machine and I have all bar TLB on my USB pendrive (TLB requires restart/admin permissions).

Isn't it the same with every OS?
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

perhaps. perhaps not. the number of entries for photoshop (and who here paid £600 for it i'm assuming not that many), winamp (more insecurities found, i hope you're all running the very latest version), msn messenger (do i need to quantify?) are legion, especially where there are more than adequate alternatives. perhaps it's a culture thing.

Photoshop: Elements 3 only cost me £70, I've tried Gimp and others and nothing does it as well for my me.
Winamp: *last comment was too flippant for me* I prefer using it, I've tried all the alternatives and keep coming back. It might be a rough diamond, but its the diamond I like.
Messenger: Don't use it myself, but if all your friends are on it and you like the features that only real messenger has what do you do?

As for Linux Versus Windows thats a whole different argument, needless to say one man's meat is another man's poison.

MAME - phwaor @ starwars and empire strikes back
SmartFTP - free and easy peasy to use
Notepad - for my html and php editting
Drivers - 'cos without them my PC would be poopy
IRC - chatting and generally mooching on #hexus.net - go on join the channel nowand idle there.
WinRAR - great piece of kit as is 7zip

I find winamp to be the most solid player ive tried yet. I love how it just works, no bloated crap etc.

And MSN is one of the least-bloated messengers out there, looks clean too
