I haven't used SteamOS, but I thought you could stream between standard steam clients - just whack Steam on your HTPC and stream to that?
SteamOS is still in a really early state right now. It's a barebones Debian install with Steam barely integrated into it, I would wait, in all honesty. It's not ready for consistent usage.
How are the Steamboxes coming along?
I'd be interested in anyones feedback on SteamOS. Thinking of taking the plunge myself.
It's essentially debian with the steam app on top. It even has Gnome. So, you should be able to play media (possibly trouble for some DRM-protected Silverlight content) without issues.
Have you tried just installing the Steam app on openElec?

I haven't touched it in a few months. When I did before it as just Debian with steam pre-installed (not even set to auto boot) and the streaming stuff wasn't working yet.
I think the best idea is shaithis and see if you can get the steam app installed on openElec and see how it preforms, if you like it then maybe take the plunge for full SteamOS

Personally I won't be touching it until more games have support, for me its not viable for a main Gaming PC, possible a HTPC.
As has been said, it's a Valve layer on top of Debian. Underneath it's got all the normal stuff: http://www.howtogeek.com/179883/how-...eamos-desktop/.
I'd 2nd the vote to install Steam under OpenElec - even if you want to go ahead with installing SteamOS it would be interesting to experience a comparison first.
I'd be interested in hearing your experience as I plan to something similar with my HTPC (running Ubuntu minimal + XBMC) in the next few months.
