Hi are they any good websites to learn website design and development
W3schools - http://www.w3schools.com/html/
Try these:
codecademy.com/en/tracks/web
html.net
A bit tongue in cheek but ... http://bit.ly/1Epaihx
And, no w3Schools is *not* a good place to learn. It's slightly improved now, but at one point so much of the information was out of date or just plain incorrect that a bunch of experienced and respected devs set up http://www.w3fools.com/ instead.
"Website development" is no longer a single topic :
HTML5
CSS3
Javascript / EcmaScript 6 - OO patterns, modules, prototypical inheritance, server-side with node.js
Tools - grunt, gulp, sass, less, bower, there's new tools every day
Automation - testing with Karma, Mocha, building with Jenkins
Web servers - Apache, Nginx
Databases - SQL DBs like Postgres, or "no sql" like Redis, Elasticsearch
Basic sys admin - Linux
Graphic design - I don't know much about this.
Let me dig up some notes I wrote before ...
That Udacity site seems to keep getting better, I'm a big fan.You could start here -
https://www.udacity.com/courses#!/all - the course materials (videos etc) are free! There's a good intro to HTML and CSS, and JavaScript Basics
Those courses at Udacity alone could probably take up a few months of your weekends, and that'd cover the first line in the list above !
Perhaps you can talk this over with a manager at your company? If they're losing their tech guy and don't have a replacement, then it might make sense if they can invest in some training for you, or allow you some self-study time? Even if they find a replacement, having a second person with a bit of knowledge helps. That way they don't have all their eggs in one basket.
There's many other online courses, but I think these are rather more academic than practical in many cases :
https://www.edx.org/course-list/alls...nce/allcourses
https://www.coursera.org/courses?ord...stems,infotech
http://www.pluralsight.com/ has tonnes of courses on a wide variety of development subjects, but it's paid for and quite in depth.
Nice to see themn win some awards.
Have you tried them yourself, Chris?
hexus trust : n(baby):n(lover):n(sky)|>P(Name)>>nopes
how do you spend your time online? (Hexus link)
Yes I have, I tend to subscribe for a month and sort of "cram" and then leave it for a couple of months. I don't have the time to justify having a permanent subscription.
But if you're like the OP and you want to learn something from scratch in a short period of time its an excellent, excellent resource. It'll continue to be that way as long as they keep buying out their competitors too (Tekpub, Codeschool, there was another that I can't remember..).
I assume you have too?
I have found youtube to be invaluable for learning new coding skills. I learned almost all my php/ javascript from youtube and I use W3Schools for reference (as the php api sucks)
Also stack overflow is a great resource for searching when you have got some skills. (Although I can't say I have ever had a question answered I can usually find enough of other answers to piece together a solution).
+1 for codecademy. It's awesome.
If you're willing to pay, take a look at Treehouse too.
I know this is old but for anyone else reading treehouse is pretty good as well as youtube i've watched some of http://leveluptuts.com/tutorials videos on some frameworks and he takes it slow so good if your a beginner!
