and wanted to try Linux.
What would I do? Download it? Burn it to a CD to install it?
Walk away from it cos I'm clueless?

I'll be handing out Knoppix CDs at the Bloodline LAN to the interested
I can see them being used for fancy "cola" coasters now mateOriginally Posted by directhex

for example, knoppix is named after the developer (klaus knopper), modified with the traditional linux-name 'x'. there's also a beernix out there.
for mail, there are lots of choices. thunderbird is the mozilla foundation's program, which is due for release later this year, there's also kmail, sylpheed, mozilla, or more, or if you want something big and Outlook compatible, there's Evolution.

Zak33,
If you can, get hold of a spare HDD and install Ubuntu Linux - probably the simplest distro to use, ok, a live CD is good but i think using a "proper" install gives a better insight into *nix...
Ubuntu is/was (?) avaliable to order free from the UbuntuLinux website, you get a nice CD in a sleeve - for a number of different architectures too...
Yes, but if he has a spare HDD, like i had when i started playing with *nix then there's no harm in jumping in at the deep end...Originally Posted by directhex

However, you are probably better with a live CD...

Hexeh, how are you running COD and Far Cry? Via Wine? And what's the performance like? The only time I've ever seen a direct linux to windows comparison for a game was on Doom3 - and Linux ganve about 1/3rd of the framerates.
If I can dump Windows and still run all the games/apps I use, then I'll look into it very seriously....
Rich :¬)
rave, with cedega (www.transgaming.com), and don't pay attnetion to comparisons where ati's involved, since ati support on linux is worse than rubbish
I take it you use Nvidia then, as they are touted as the best linux cards? Which one specifically, if this is the case?Originally Posted by directhex
