    Automated USB backup

    Hi all,

I would like to automatically backup a USB stick to a device every time I plug it in. I'm thinking, I get home from a client, whip my USB stick off my keychain, plug it into said device and have it do it's thing and then notify me in one way or another when it's done. The important thing is, that it automatically goes off and does it's thing without me having to interact in any way (other than plugging it in!).

I am happy to consider a stand alone device that handles this type of thing specifically.
I am also happy to (and would prefer to) use my raspberry pi for such a thing as it's always on anyway.
Failing the above two, I would consider my Windows 7 desktop, but I would ideally like to avoid this.

Does anyone have any experience with such a thing?

    Thanks
    -Chris

Not sure how you would say the work is finished though, other than perhaps if you unmount the drive at the end the activity LED might go out? I think that depends on the stick.

    Re: Automated USB backup

    Cheers DWU

Ideally I would use some sort of prepared package for this kind of thing instead of using my own (the logic being, someone else is probably much better at this than me!). That said, this seems like a simple solution that will do exactly what I'm after. I could even RSYNC the data, which is handy.

If I'm configuring my own script, I think I will just get the backup host to email me when it's done.
