Unhappy Windows XP disk usage is rubbish

Here we go, you do the Math, Windows XP certainly can't

Partitioned my laptop disk and allocated 13 gig for windows

Installed windows and office and a few small apps, eg: putty.

clicking on the C disk, XP reports

    total size = 13.6 gig
    Free Space 7.86 gig

By my math that means 5.74 gig is used

The Root of the C disk has 5 dir's 4 normal and 1 hidden

    Here is the Math

    c:\windows = 2.32 gig
    c:\program files 686 meg
    c:\Documents and settings = 101 meg
    c:\shared =4.93 meg
    c:\MSOCache (hidden) 8.04 meg

    that = 3119.97 meg

So 2 gig is missing ????

    anyone else seen this ?

and are you measuring size on disk?

    mine: 60gb partition... 58.9GB allocated
    root: 805,724,160 bytes - 768mb
inetpub,i386 (might delete - duplicated by accident! ), drivers, various bits and bobs: 1,074,085,888 bytes - 1gb
    docs and settings: 2,597,187,584 bytes - 2.41gb
    program files: 15,025,311,744 bytes =- 13.9gb
    svi: 178,286,592 bytes - 170mb
    software: 3,609,780,224 bytes - 3.36gb
    win: 3,554,594,816 bytes - 3.3gb

...soooo by my reckoning - that does add up correctly - got a 300mb differential which I'm thinking is down to not counting another folder in the root, or down to mft size/area calculations

I was measuring on what windows reported not what was on the label

eg: 30 gig disk really = 28.3 disk

I'm not sure about a 3 gig page file directhex.

I just not used to these windows systems.

I think a 3 gig difference is a bit off though, even if you call it 1.5 gig of page file as I have 1 gig of ram in the box, thats still 1.5 gig missing.

    Hibernate?

In run box type cmd and hit ok

Then in command prompt box type dir/all, should show you the non viewable system files and their size.

checked all hidden files. No hibernate space as I've turned it off, no util or hibernate partitions.

I really do find this quite confusing.

I thought reycled bin was classed as a file on the disk - any way thats empty too.

    Its really confusing

lol - what about system volume information?
holds restore point information - particularly if you've installed SP2 that will account for a large amount of lost space

I've removed all the SP2 install files, etc etc but even if I have installed service pack 2 the windows folder should grow in size, not just loose space.

Have you checked how much space System Restore is using? It is most probably that. Right click my computer then properties, it's easy to find.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

maybe the space has been taken when partitioning...like when i partition my 160weston digi it reported as 156gb...so you could have lost some space during partitioning...
