Photoshop CS and the Magnetic Lasso

OK i want to use this on some photos which dont have a good contrast between the bit i want and the background. (a normal photo)

How can i get the best from the magnetic lasso?

What would be a good pixel, contrast and frequency for this?
should it be a higher pixel setting lower contrast and higher freq?

How do you delete fastening points... ive read that i should press delelte but it never works.. even if i hold it down. Also how can i move around the image when zoomed in and doing it.... i can only seem to move around if i pull the mouse near the edges but then it jumps and i get fastening points everywhere.... which i cant delete.

And what key can i press (or how do i set it) to make it repeat the filter i just applied.

Can we see the image ?
If your extracting it, the "extract" tool may be a lot easier than lasso'ing it.

Not really just a bit of patience .

I could never get the hang of the magnetic lasso it always does something you dont want it to. I think backspace should take out the last fastening point though.
Ctrl+F should redo the last filter If I remember correctly .

It depends on the situation i suppose. Some things would take so long using it, it just dont make sence to use that tool, when others would do the job better.

I pressed ctrl+f after applying a filter... nothing.

No idea why it doesnt do what the help says... any ideas?

theres also the selection by colour tool (might not be called that, cant remember at the mo) basically it lets you select an area of the pic by its RGB/Hue/Saturation etc.

    Is that the magic wand?

The strange things about the hot keys thing is that none of them seem to work except some of them like ctrl z. I cant zoom in or out either with keys.

The extract thing worked well with a picture which has good edge contrast but on a real photo it was a bit naff.... saying that my pics are only 2 Mbit maybe using high res pics would work better... but i dont have a high res digi cam.

I got a magazine which come out recently, big thick thing it was the next one is about macromedia flash (i get loads of mags free) anyway I saw in there normal pictures taken outside messy background with the people ripped out which were really good nice edge detection. unfortunatly they dont go into enough technical details about how they did it. There must be an easy way to do it without having to resort to zooming in so much.... or isnt there?
