    Angry Argh, lecture!

Brilliant, today I just had one of the biggest lectures of my life.

My current ICT coursework is to create a website, which I quite easy.
As some of you may know, I am a fan of the Notepad(TextPad now) way of writing HTML, I just feel I have much more control over my code.

So now, infront of my whole class (who see me as somewhat a "guru") my ICT teacher just gave me a massive leacture on how to do my "job"

It'd really does pee me off the way my ICT teacher is forcing me to use Dreamweaver.

I'm not saying Dreamweaver is bad, infact quite the opposite, I think it's a great tool, much better than Frontpage but I just dont like to use it.

Also, his comments annoy the hell out of me "Any sensible web designer would use Dreamweaver 100%, it's just not good to use Notepad/The Dreamweaver code view" or "Writing it in Notepad would mean learning HTML"

    <end rant>

Heh, i've been in the same situation. I told him exactly what i thought. To be honest, he doesn't know what he's talking about, it's all down to the designer at the end of the day, they can have any approach to creating a website. Personally I use notepad for ALL of my web work

TBH if they say that they shouldn't be teaching the subject.

Any serious webdesigner would want to know how to use the code rather than clicking a few buttons, as there are still times dreamweaver royally messes things up.

I'm now employed full time as a web developer for a major UK travel company, *all* my code is done in notepad/textpad.

Especially when doing dynamic sites in asp, php or anything similar, you *need* to know the fundamentals before you do anything else..

"Writing it in Notepad would mean learning HTML"
Ummm isn't that the whole point??

Amazing how so many IT teachers stick to what they know and are out of date in their knowledge. Some are just plain incompitent. E.g was once asked to remove a drive bay as he didn't know how/ he once opened up a computer while it was still on and tried to remove the ram / watched him blow up a PSU, dunno how but it happened / still uses Logo in advanced studys to teach higher level students simple programing...Come on, kids now days are often far surpassing the knowledge of teachers(not bashing you oldies out there...i mean...*wise elders*).

Exactly the points I put across to him, but he still acted like a d**k

Yeah, that's what I thought, that's the whole point!

Also he says stuff like "and if the business likes your website, maybe you can get some financial gain out of them" Yeah, let's get more websites with Flash navigation on the internet!

Trouble is, if I write it all in Notepad (as I always do) he will fail me on my coursework

I just remembered what he said to me,
"You shouldn't get stuck with a method that was only used back in the 90's, things have moved on"

Most of the work in our company is done in visual studio, because most html pages are generated from bits chopped out of xml pages in response to scripts, couldn't do that in dreamweaver!
They told me I was gullible ... and I believed them.

Professionally? Maybe you should re-word that

I've been working in professional web development for years and I run a web development and content management company. TBH I've never heard so much bull in my life.

NO serious web developer would use dreamweaver in their work. Not one. It is simply not good enough.

I use Dreamweaver, it has an excellent code based interface, you don't need to use the WYSIWYG interface. I'd also like to think I'm a serious web developer.

If you are using it as a syntax highlighting editor I'd offer that that's not the same thing as what the lecturer is saying.

Yeah, the lecturer is talking about the WYSIWYG editing from the looks of things..

I guess he's never seen the code it creates after you move a few items about, or resize a couple of tables..

The worst thing Dreamweaver does is write code that places restrictions on the amount of vertical expansion of table cells. I have NEVER received HTML code from a Creative/Front end developer written in Dreamweaver that has not needed either heavy modification or being entirely rewritten because of this.

That and monstrously complex nested tables for fairly simple layout tasks which would have been done with a couple of lines of html and some css..
