you'll have difficulty watching compressed video on _ANY_ operating system with a processor that lethargic.

and damn small linux is designed as a live cd, it lacks any real scope outside that.

it CAN install, but that doesn't mean it SHOULD.

and the minimum to play back compressed MPEG2 data without jumping (i.e. watch a dvd) is around 400Mhz P2 with no hardware acceleration. You certainly can't decompress something more complex than that (e.g. an MPEG4 codec) without frame skipping.

as for what to install, it's still LARGELY up to you, i just wouldn't install a distribution designed for live cd use to disk, you'll only run into trouble when adding packages.

use a ready build distro with tons of multimedia support built in.

something with really good hardware support like suse or fedora, not the best distro's but good for your needs

ikonia, remember there's no mp3 playback in fedora for patent reasons.

perhaps something european and lawless like mandrake?

I would avoid X altogether on that machine.
Use a distro with a flexible install that makes it easy not to install X (debian? gentoo?) and then go with mplayer and either the vesa or directFB driver for video playback, and use something like midnight commander as a primitive shell to find and launch files.

tbh, I would have thought you'd get some jumpiness on DivX/MPEG-4 video even so, but maybe you'll be OK.
