Whitelisting's been present by default for a while hasn't it? You just change the setting to block them too if you want.

Or if you prefer to go direct (or need it for other browsers) https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock

It also seems to have substantially lower RAM usage than adblock+

Re: Start finding a replacement for AdBlock

Adblock has said only 25 per cent of Adblock Plus users are strictly against any advertising. It said those users can disable the feature.
So .... and someone please correct me if I'm reading that wrong, but AdBlocks attitude is that people using an AdBlocker aren't actually trying to block ad's, but if you REALLY want to block ad's, you can disable the feature in the Adblocker that lets ad's through, so they really are blocked?

My bet .... if they really do do this, the backlash will result in someone else coming up with an effective ad-blocker, and AdBlock being dumped in vast numbers.

Just on the offchance that anuone from Adblock reads this, the reason I use Adblock is so it blockd ad's. Not do it blocks ad's except where you've been paid off to let them though. The ONLY thing I want from it is that absolutely any and all ad's, if at all possible without ANY exceptions, are blocked. Never mind whitelists, I simply don't want ANY adverts, full stop.

Which is why I use Adblock. If it doesn't do what it says on the tin, why bother with it?

So, like shaithis said, the search begins, and for a utility for Firefox and Opera, not Chrome. Various Chromium versions, like Comodo Dragon, perhaps, but not Chrome.

No whitelisted sponsored ads in these: Adblock Edge for Firefox, Adblock Latitude for Pale Moon. Both are direct forks of Adblock Plus.

Had enough of chrome now, switched to firefox and installed Adblock Edge. Just remember that some websites are run by honest people who make money from Ad rev, (like Hexus), so its nice to disable it for them. Especially when they go to effort to avoid having large, offensive and/or annoying adverts (like Hexus).

Re: Start finding a replacement for AdBlock

I use Adblock Plus because I don't want any oversized, animated or sound playing ads.

If this news means that advertisers start designing their banner ads more carefully, great. However if it means that they will continue business as usual, I will simply be opting out of the positive list and start blocking everything again.

I thought this was in place for ages, i.e. I unchecked the 'allow non intrusive ads' (the ones that companies pay adblock to allow) ??

Yes, they started doing this back in 2011.

I suppose its a bit of media hype all of a sudden, because Google/Microsoft have now signed up to it.

You can disable the white-listing in the settings. It's a fuss about nothing really.

Perhaps, but an ad blocking app that has heavy ties with companies that rely on ad rev should raise a few eyebrows.
