Office 2013 on Windows Server 2012 Essentials?

    Hi Guys,

I have a friend opening a small business and he's got himself a small desktop server running 2012 Essentials to run a couple of tills. He's also thinking of using it as his office computer for emails etc. and to that end was going to buy Office 2013. The only issue is that the MS website doesn't mention anything other than Office 365. I've had a look and I can't confirm anything I either. I even had a live-chat conversation with MS but she couldn't help either.

    Anyone have any input?

    Cheers.

    A.

Sort of, except that it doesn't specify 2012 Essentials, or R2, but it does specify 2008 R2.

    "Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2012"

I actually asked the Windows live-chat assistant this very question and she said she didn't know.

Perhaps try the eval before he puts his hand in his pocket?

Seems to suggest 2012 server is supported though.

Given that you can publish Office through RDSH on Server 2012R2 I'd be surprised if this didn't work, but Dave has a point.

Sorry if my initial response seemed a little blunt, I thought you were struggling to find somewhere to actually buy it rather than querying compatibility

I actually think I still have a Server 2012 Essentials installer still from my Technet sub - I'll spin up a VM and test it out for you.

EDIT - or rather I would, but the VPN at home seems to be playing up so I can't get to the lab. I'll be back home on Sat/Sun so I'll test it then and get back to you.

I might suggest that this probably isn't the best of ideas. This is a serious production server, and you don't want all the crap under the sun coming from the internet and being run on a proper server. Best leaving it alone and leave office work to a desktop/laptop.

Re: Office 2013 on Windows Server 2012 Essentials?

Alright, confirmed it, Windows Server 2012 Essentials (R2) will take Office 2013.

    Thanks for your input guys.

Aidanjt - I hear you but that's the decision he's made. Since it'll just be him on it hopefully it should be fine. If needs expand I'm sure he'll stick a client PC in front of it.

Server 2012 Essentials comes with the Hyper-V role - might be worth spinning up a VM with a client OS to keep things segregated as Aidanjt. If he's putting PCI stuff through the server as a EPOS then running a workload requiring connectivity to the internet is not a great idea.
