Java vs .NET

Well, after the mini flame wars I've had I thought it best to start up a flame-arama! A very good discussion on Slashdot (which is biased I will admit) on Java v. .Net.

Unfortunately most pro-Java people and sites will always favour Java, and the opposite for .Net. I suppose it's a bit like the argument between Linux and Windows where people tend to just say one is better than the other without really knowing both systems. However, one thing is fairly clear: Java is (currently) far more prolific on many platforms:

servers
phones
pda's
embedded devices (TiVo, etc)

So on current form I'd argue that Java is winning. Although I think .Net is probably a slightly better language (not surprising since .Net is basically Microsofts attempt at rewriting Java so has learned from the mistakes Java has made over the years).

i've used both Java and .NET to develop a couple of fairly sizeable appliactions and i would say IMHO that for me Java is great cause of the platform independence while .NET offers a pretty powerful IDE ...

it all comes down to the project itself and any other interfaces that ur app might have

in my book they're both good tools
