    ubuntu server issue

Hi i am running ubuntu server 14.x version and have been running it fine over the past 6+months, however i notice how i could no longer connect via ssh or through windows(running samba file share)

I sometimes able to connect to the server via ssh but typing and navigating through ssh using terminal/putty sometimes hangs and becomes unresponsive.

The connection then drops imediently after and i have to reboot the server manually.

i noticed this error when i checked the server through my monitor connected to it.

    here is the fault:

I'd take a guess at bad RAM. Have you tried a memtest?

    Re: ubuntu server issue

Why not blacklist all the kernel modules you are not actually using.

    Or.

Revert back to a previous kernel.

    Or..

Have you updated recently, maybe something is buggy.

Kernel? Do you mean previous version of Ubuntu server?

    And blacklist what?

    Re: ubuntu server issue

I'd suggest its a hardware error. I had a similar type of problem on a Fedora system. Sometimes it needed three or four attempts to boot it. Took it apart and reseated everything and all seemed OK. Never quite got to the bottom of it, maybe a poor connection at build time, or maybe I moved something while I was tinkering.

But memtest is a good place to start.

If you have automatic updates enabled you might have downloaded something incompatable arable. Unlikely though. Hence abaxas's suggestion to go back to a previous release.

I don't know how Ubuntu handles that, on a Fedora system, the GRUB boot menu offers that as an option during the boot process, if you have that enabled in the GRUB setup.

Good luck with the fault finding!

Oh yes, I know I bang on about this, but check your SATA plugs!

    Re: ubuntu server issue

I would also do an overnight memtest on the machine as a first step. Check CPU temperature in the BIOS, and failing that I would probably swap out the power supply followed by the motherboard.

Do you have logs from other crashes? The machine seems to be dying while trying to read a directory there, but even with a broken drive it shouldn't take the box down just spit out a ton of errors and stutter so it doesn't feel like a drive problem.

    Re: ubuntu server issue

    A sad computer.

The first line of your screenshot shows the console login: prompt, but then begins outputting lines of a General Protection Fault. This is a bit like the Linux equivalent of the old Windows blue/black screen of death. Not good.

Also like the BSOD, the causes can vary from dodgy hardware (hence recommendations about memory and SATA cables), to bad drivers (hence the questions about recently updated software).

Do you have physical access to the machine?

It looks like you have an Asus P8H77-V LE motherboard and BIOS version 0237. That looks a bit old, so another option might be a BIOS update. There's about 10 newer versions listed on http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8H...Desk_Download/ and many list general notes such as "Improve system stability.", but nothing specific.

I agree, it's surprising how many apparent hardware problems are solved by re-plugging stuff. E.g. I was getting BSODs which were cured by reseating the RAM*, a friend was getting weird artifacting and stuttering in games which went away after rebuilding the system, etc.

*I was actually in the process of figuring out which module was faulty to RMA it, but after testing one at a time, they both worked fine and continued to do so.

Edit: Oh and another one, after booting into Ubuntu, my sound card really messed up somehow; sound was very loud and horribly distorted in Windows and wasn't cured by a reboot. Moving it to another PCI slot fixed it somehow. Like PeterB's problem, I never figured out quite how or why that happened. Aaand another one (which I also go on about a lot) was apparent drive failure (even SMART errors) caused by a cheap SATA power splitter.

Hi all . Just a quick update.

i did a mmtest for like 12 hours and all tests pass. no errors. i then reseat the sata and power cables and booted up the server again and within 5mins i got the exact same error being posted on screen.

    Re: ubuntu server issue

I've had a closer look at your screen shot and that General protection fault does point to memory, notwithstanding your success with memtest.

I was also going back over the fault I had, with started when I added more (identical) RAMA to my system. Again, in my case, memtest showed no faults, but I tried swapping round the RAM sticks, and the problem seemed to go.

So if you haven't removed and reseated the RAM, try that. If that doesn't fix it, try swapping the RAM around.

    Hi Pete.

I swapped and used different ram and for about an hour or so it was fine and then the message error popped up again

I will try and update bios and see if that works.

    Maybe the board is screwed?

How come mmtest does not fail then?
